There is something sacred happening right now.

You can feel it if you’re paying attention—not to the noise, not to the chaos, not to the constant demand for our labor—but to the quiet. To the pauses. To the exhale that so many of us are finally allowing ourselves to take.

Black people are resting.

And not the kind of rest that comes after exhaustion just to return to it again. Not the temporary collapse before re-entering systems that demand our survival at the cost of our humanity. This is a different kind of rest. A deeper one. A remembering.

A return.

For generations, we have been taught—conditioned—to push through. To endure. To survive at all costs. Survival became our inheritance. Our brilliance was measured in how much we could carry, how much we could withstand, how much we could rebuild after being broken.

But survival is not the destination. It was never supposed to be.

What we are witnessing now is a collective shift away from survival and toward something far more powerful: thriving rooted in truth, in history, in spirit, and in each other.

And for many of us, grief was the doorway.

Grief has a way of stripping everything down. It removes the illusions, the distractions, the false sense of control. It forces you to sit in the stillness and confront what is real. When you lose someone, when your world cracks open, you begin to understand that the systems we cling to for stability were never designed to hold us.

Sometimes the entire world has to collapse for you to find your way back to yourself.

We have spent years—decades—naming the violence Black men experience at the hands of policing in America. We have marched, documented, recorded, and buried our dead. We have forced the world to watch.

But there is another system of violence that has operated just as quietly, just as consistently, and just as lethally.

And this time, it is happening in hospitals.

To Black women.

Let me be clear: the same way Black men enter encounters with police knowing it could cost them their lives, Black women enter healthcare systems—especially during pregnancy and childbirth—carrying a risk that should never exist in a developed nation.

Black women in the United States are nearly three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). In some places, that number rises to four to five times more likely. And over 80% of these deaths are preventable.

And if you think Massachusetts is immune—think again.

We lived in circles, not hierarchies. In many traditional African societies, life was not organized around accumulation, but around belonging. To exist was to be held.

The Memory of Us

Across the continent, long before colonial disruption, communities operated on principles that many of us are still trying to reclaim.

Ubuntu.

I am because we are.

It wasn’t just philosophy—it was infrastructure.

Children were raised collectively. Food was shared. Elders were revered as living libraries. There was no concept of individual success detached from collective well-being. You did not rise if it meant someone else fell.

Contrast that with now.

We celebrate billionaires while people sleep on sidewalks.

The Caribbean tells one story—just in different accents.

From Haiti to Jamaica, from Barbados to Cuba, from Trinidad to Puerto Rico, from the Dominican Republic to The Bahamas—and for me, from Grenada, home—the timelines shift, the flags change, but the pattern remains the same:

Slavery ended.

But power did not transfer.

Freedom was declared.

But justice was deferred.

And if we’re honest, this story does not stop at the shoreline.

The Diaspora Is Not Separate—It Is Continuous

What happened in the Caribbean did not stay in the Caribbean.

It moved.

It lives in the United States.

It lives in Latin America.

It lives in Europe.

It lives anywhere our people were taken, scattered, or forced to rebuild.

The African diaspora is not a collection of disconnected experiences—it is a single, continuous story shaped by displacement, resistance, and survival.

The same systems that denied land in Jamaica created sharecropping in the American South.

The same racial hierarchies in the Dominican Republic show up in anti-Blackness across Latin America.

The same economic isolation imposed on Haiti echoes in how Black nations and communities are treated globally.

Different geography.

Same design.

We are connected not just by ancestry—but by structure.

And that’s what people miss when they try to isolate our struggles.

Grenada: A Small Island, A Global Story

When I speak about this, I speak from Grenada—not just as a place, but as a point in that larger map.

Grenada’s history—colonization, revolution, intervention—is not unique. It is part of a broader pattern of what happens when Black people move toward self-determination.

There is always a response.

There is always a recalibration.

There is always an effort to contain what cannot be controlled.

And that pattern does not end at borders.

Haiti Was the Blueprint—and the Warning

Haiti showed the world what was possible.

A successful revolution.

A free Black republic.

A declaration that slavery could be dismantled completely—not negotiated, not softened, but ended.

And for that, Haiti was punished.

Not just in that moment—but for generations.

Because Haiti disrupted the global order.

And the global order responded.

That response did not stay in Haiti.

It became policy.

It became precedent.

It became the quiet understanding that Black freedom—real freedom—would always be met with resistance.

In this series, we’ve named the global assault on Black and brown humanity and traced its historical timeline. Today, I want to talk about the foundation beneath all of it — the thing imperial powers have always feared and tried to destroy:

Culture.
Connection.
Community.
The aliveness between us.

Because when you look across history, it becomes clear:
Empire doesn’t just want land. It wants souls.
It wants to break the human bonds that make liberation possible.

And even after centuries of violence, the one thing Black and brown people have always rebuilt — stronger, louder, more vibrant each time — is culture. Our shared humanity expressed through rhythm, memory, spirit, and joy.

Culture Is the First Language of Humanity

Long before borders, before flags, before governments and armies — people knew each other through culture:

• music

• movement

• ritual

• storytelling

• food

• celebration

• grief

• community care

Culture is the human operating system.
It’s how we say, I see you without ever speaking.

But this is also exactly why empire targets it.

Because no matter how many laws are written, how many guns are pointed, how many borders are drawn — you cannot fully control a people who remain connected to each other.

So if empire wants domination, it must first break connection.

Enslaved Africans Rebuilt Humanity From Scratch

When Africans were abducted and forced across the Atlantic, they were intentionally separated by:

• ethnic group

• language

• religion

• region

• family

The goal was simple: erase the ability to unite.

But what empire failed to understand is that culture is not static — it is regenerative.

Even when everything was taken, enslaved Africans created new forms of connection:

Through Music

Drums were banned. So hands became drums.
The body became an instrument.
Rhythms became coded messages, spiritual technology, and declarations of identity.

Yesterday, I wrote that I no longer want to talk about this sham administration because everything we warned about is already happening. The assault on humanity is not new — it is simply more visible. What we’re witnessing today is the continuation of a global pattern that has been playing out for decades, even centuries, against Black and brown people across the world.

So today, I want to zoom out.
Not to soften the truth — but to anchor it.

Because none of this began last week.
None of this began last year.
And absolutely none of this is accidental.

This is a long war.

A Timeline the World Pretends Not to See

When you map the suffering, the pattern is undeniable. The names change — the weapons change — the “official explanations” rotate — but the targets remain consistent.

1948 to present — Palestine: Gaza & the West Bank
Since the moment Palestinians were displaced from their land in 1948, the region has endured continuous cycles of war, occupation, and ethnic cleansing. Every decade brings a new “operation,” a new naming ceremony for the same violence. Entire generations have lived and died under siege.

1960s–present — Congo, culminating in the Second Congo War (1998–2003)
Often called “Africa’s World War,” this conflict pulled in multiple nations and left over five million dead — most of them civilians. And why? So the world could control cobalt, coltan, and the minerals that make phones, electric cars, artificial intelligence, and modern warfare possible. Congo has been bled so the rest of the world can shine.

2003–2005 and resurging today — Darfur, Sudan
The genocide that the international community claimed it would “never allow again” happened in real time — and is happening again. Black African communities targeted, displaced, massacred. And global powers, once again, shrug.

2011–present — Syria
A civil war backed by global powers on all sides has turned brown civilian bodies into collateral damage. Millions displaced, entire cities erased, and a refugee crisis met with barbed wire and xenophobia.

2014–present — Yemen
One of the deadliest humanitarian crises in the world. A blockade engineered starvation, relentless airstrikes, poisoned water systems — and a brown population left to fend for itself while nations debate “geopolitics.”

Decades of instability — The Sahel: Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Chad, Nigeria, Cameroon
Communities caught between extremist groups, state militaries, and foreign forces. Villages wiped out, children recruited or killed, millions displaced. The world calls it “terrorism.” The people living through it call it survival.

Centuries of destabilization — Haiti
The first free Black republic has paid the price for its freedom every day since 1804. Foreign intervention, imposed debt, occupation, and political manipulation have produced conditions where violence becomes both a weapon and a justification for further control.

Western Sahara & West Papua
Indigenous Black and brown communities resisting occupation, land theft, and resource extraction — invisible to mainstream media yet carrying some of the heaviest burdens of colonial violence.

These conflicts aren’t isolated. They are chapters of the same book:
a global system that devalues Black and brown life while extracting everything possible from Black and brown land.
