Today’s decision by the Supreme Court to criminalize homelessness has rightfully sparked outrage and concern among advocates for the homeless community. The ruling, which allows local governments to fine, arrest and prosecute individuals for sleeping in public spaces, is a major blow to those who are already struggling to find shelter and resources.

Criminalizing homelessness not only violates the basic human rights of individuals who have no other options but to sleep on the streets, but it also perpetuates a cycle of poverty and marginalization. By punishing people for their lack of housing, this decision further stigmatizes and discriminates against a vulnerable population, making it even more difficult for them to access the services and support they need to get back on their feet.
