Shirley Chisholm is one of my favorite Black historical figures. The first Black woman to be elected to the United States Congress. A trailblazer who told us all to pull up our seats at the table if they weren’t making room for us. A woman of Bajan (Barbadian) descent. A strong Black Caribbean woman. My favorite and someone I could see myself in.
It is Black History Month, February 2023!
It has always bothered me that Black History Month is celebrated during the shortest month of the year. It is like everything else. When you are a Black person in this world, you are somehow being shortchanged or underserved. The truth is Black history is history. We shouldn’t need a month to single that out. We should be teaching the true history of all people in the world every day of the year, not just during Black history month. The other challenge is that we are learning continued whitewashed history during Black history month unless Black people or institutions intentionally serve it up with the truth.
