Recently I sat down with a few colleagues at work to discuss my book, “The Exit - Living with Urban Joy.” During the conversation we touched on how important it is to understand where you come from in order to appropriately navigate your future. It made me think about the times we are in. How history has shown us what the actions of someone like Donald Trump, now a convicted felon, can lead to. Yet there are more than 40% of the voting public willing to put him back into office. He has openly admitted that he’s anti democracy - threatening to rewrite the constitution and become a dictator on day one - the US is on the brink of collapse from people who call themselves, patriots.
Understanding history is crucial in preventing harm - like electing leaders such as Donald Trump. By considering the lessons in historical events and political movements, we can recognize warning signs and patterns of behavior that may lead to the rise of authoritarian leaders or the erosion of democratic norms. History teaches us about the consequences of unchecked power, divisive rhetoric, and the manipulation of fear and prejudice for political gain. By understanding these historical lessons, we can better evaluate political candidates, policies, and the state of our democracy, making informed decisions that safeguard against the dangers of authoritarianism, populism, and intolerance. History serves as a guide to help us navigate the complexities of our present moment and ensure that we do not repeat the mistakes of the past.
While making direct comparisons between political figures can be controversial and oversimplified, there are some similarities between Donald Trump and Adolf Hitler that have been noted by historians, political analysts, and the general public.
Similarities:
1. Authoritarian tendencies: Both Trump and Hitler have demonstrated authoritarian tendencies, such as undermining democratic norms and institutions, consolidating power, and suppressing dissent.
2. Nationalistic rhetoric: Both leaders have used nationalist rhetoric to appeal to their base, promoting the idea of putting their country's interests first and demonizing perceived enemies or outsiders.
3. Populist appeal: Trump and Hitler both garnered support by tapping into the frustrations and grievances of segments of the population who felt marginalized or disenfranchised.
4. Cult of personality: Both leaders have cultivated a cult of personality, with a strong focus on themselves as strong, charismatic leaders who can provide solutions to their country's problems.
5. Controversial policies: Both Trump and Hitler have implemented controversial policies that have drawn criticism and sparked debate, particularly in relation to immigration, minority rights, and foreign relations.
